According to a new report and on the heel of the Windows 8 RTM, we are learning that Microsoft is discontinuing the use of the “Metro” Windows 8 branding. Apparently, Microsoft is in discussions with an important European partners and they were told not to use the word “Metro” anymore.

According to the report, Microsoft’s Windows team is working on a replacement term for the word “Metro” and “plans to land on that by the end of this week.” Employees have been advised to refer to the Metro style user interface as the “Windows 8 style UI.” This comes from an internal memo that was distributed to employees earlier this week. Windows 8 just recently hit RTM and this move comes as a surprise to many. More on this as Microsoft issues an official statement.
