Microsoft demos real-time audio translation with Skype Translator

During the Code Conference today, Microsoft showcased real-time audio translation with the Skype Translator, a feature that is set to arrive for Windows later this year. In the demo, Microsoft showed off near real-time audio translation between two languages, effectively combining Skype, IM, and Translator into one.

“Skype Translator results from decades of work by the industry, years of work by our researchers, and now is being developed jointly by the Skype and Microsoft Translator teams. The demo showed near real-time audio translation from English to German and vice versa, combining Skype voice and IM technologies with Microsoft Translator, and neural network-based speech recognition,” Microsoft stated in an official blog post.

Skype Translator is a join effort between the Skype team and Microsoft Translator team, a result from decades of work by the industry and years of research.

Skype Translator will be available as a beta app for Windows 8 before the end of 2014. Skype currently has more than 300 million connected users each month, and more than 2 billion minutes of conversation a day.
