Sea of Thieves Season Seven goes live today and brings with it a much-anticipated feature for fans of the swashbuckling adventure game: ship captaincy.

That’s right, Sea of Thieves players can now purchase their very own ships, christen them with a name of their own choosing, and set sail as the ship’s captain. This was first unveiled back in June during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase.

Along with the title of Captain comes new perks and customization options (i.e. trinkets and decorative items). Also, the new Captain’s Logbook provides a new kind of progression with Pirate and Ship Milestones. These record your various Captaining accomplishments, and open the way to new rewards.

While this exciting new feature will no doubt add a whole new dynamic to Sea of Thieves gameplay, there is much more in store for fans in Season Seven. You can learn more on the game’s website, where you’ll find the official release notes for Season Seven. The update is available across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Windows 10 and 11 PC. It is free for those who own the game and for Xbox Game Pass members.

And if you are new to Sea of Thieves, welcome to the best online pirate game around. Don’t forget to check out the Pirate Academy to help you get started with the best weaponry of all: information.
