Acer Embraces the Microsoft Pluton Chip

Another one of Microsoft’s partners has come on board with the company’s Pluton Security chip. This time, it is Acer, who, together with AMD, have launched the Acer TravelMate P4 and the TravelMate Spin P4 with Microsoft Pluton technology.

Powered by the AMD Ryzen Pro 6000 Series mobile processors, with Pro technologies, Microsoft and Acer agree that the two new devices can “significantly raise the Acer TravelMate’s ability to withstand sophisticated physical attacks.” That’s because these two Windows 11 devices are the first that incorporates Pluton with the Security Processor enabled by default out of the factory. Previously, on the new AMD-powered ThinkPad Z13 and Z16 from Lenovo, Pluton was disabled by default.

With that said, the Pluton chip gives a little bit of extra peace of mind when it comes to security. You can enjoy chip to cloud updates via Windows Update, as security threats continue to evolve. Additionally, even if someone steals your PC, or if it is misplaced, the AMD CPU and Pluton being on the same silicon die makes physical attacks on the hardware substantially more complex and costly.

Devices that have the Pluton TPM 2.0 offers all the same features provided by other TPMs. Yet it benefits from the CPU integrated security, the cloud-to-chip updates, and Windows TPM-based features that are validated to run seamlessly on Pluton.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cX Gen 3 ThinkPad X13s is the other device with the Pluton chip. “We know that adversaries have shifted their sights to more exotic techniques including hardware attacks. This is why Microsoft is committed to the Pluton Security Processor as an innovative solution to securing the next generation of Windows PCs against these emerging threats,” said David Weston, Vice President of Enterprise and OS Security.
