Surface Pro 4 receives firmware update, Windows Hello, cameras, and UEFI included

Mark Coppock

If you’ve been waiting for some new firmware update goodness for your Surface Pro 4, then Microsoft decided to deliver a little later in the afternoon than usual (at least on the east coast of the U.S.). Today, Microsoft pushed some firmware updates for the Surface Pro 4 (updated: and the Surface Book as well), including a number of components.

On the author’s machine, an update error notification first came in, and visiting Settings > Windows Update, the following screen popped up:

Surface Pro 4 firmware updates.
Surface Pro 4 firmware updates.

Hitting update then installed each component separately, and then the machine rebooted. So, the process was a little different than past updates, with the addition of another step. Your mileage may vary.

Here’s a textual list of everything that was updated:

  • Microsoft driver update for Surface Camera Windows Hello

If you have a Surface Pro 4, go hit that update button, and let us know in the comments if you notice any improvements. If you have a Surface Book, hit up our tip line and let us know if you receive an update as well. (Author’s note: the first thing I noticed after the update is that Windows Hello is significantly faster on my Surface Pro 4. That’s a good thing.)

Update: The Surface Book received its own set of updates as well.
