The Minecraft movie is about to finally begin production with shooting starting on August 7 in New Zealand. With the April 4, 2025 release date announced earlier this year, this should give the various players involved in the film’s production plenty of time shoot the live-action movie.

The official synopsis for Minecraft: The Movie reads:

The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.

The live-action ‘MINECRAFT’ movie reportedly begins filming in August in New Zealand.

Jason Momoa will star in the film, as will Matt Berry. While it was previously reported that Momoa would be put in the role of Minecraft protagonist Steve, casting details now seem uncertain.

The Minecraft Movie will be distributed by Warner Bros, with Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite fame serving as director. The project has seen a long path to development, having been first announced in early 2014.

Jason Momoa’s role in the Minecraft movie remains unclear.

While the long wait has no doubt been disappointing for Minecraft fans, the timing could work out nicely for the project, with video game-to-TV and movie adaptations all the rage right now.
