Atari to release new premium video games for consoles and PC – onmsft.com

Atari has announced (via GI) that the company will be pivoting from free-to-play mobile games to producing major “premium games on all platforms.”

While specifics on devices weren’t mentioned in the announcement, “all platforms” likely includes Microsoft’s Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles families in addition Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs.

Surprisingly, Atari’s first premium video game is expected to launch sometime before March 31st next year, just over eight months from now.

“Our intent with any gaming experience is to provide accessible and joyful moments of meaningful play,” Atari CEO, Wade J. Rosen, said in a statement. “That’s the core of Atari and what binds our history with our future. To that end, we feel that premium gaming is better representative of this type of gaming experience and the Atari DNA.”

While Atari has mostly been a quiet player in the video game space for a long while now, the company has been making some interesting moves recently with the creation of its own cryptocurrency, the Atari Token, in 2020, and the launch of a video game console/PC two-in-one box, the Atari VCS, just last month.

Could Atari make a comeback? Time will tell.
