Windows 8.1 Update 1 leaks onto the internet

We’ve seen leaked screenshots of the upcoming Update 1 for Windows 8.1 and now it has finally leaked after weeks of teasing. The leaked build string is 9600.16596.WINBLUES14_GDR_LEAN.140114-0237 and comes in a 64bit flavor. As usual, we will not be posting direct download links to this build.

For those that do not know, Update 1 is scheduled to add the ability to pin Metro/Modern apps to the desktop taskbar, as well as showcase the taskbar while using a modern app. The update also adds the ability to shutdown your PC via the Start screen as well as a Search button on the Start screen.

Microsoft has also apparently added a link to the classic Control Panel in the PC Settings app, which is designed to be a modern version of the Control Panel. Surprisingly, Microsoft has yet to combine the two.

The update also features context menus that appear when you right-click on the app tile, allowing you to resize, pin, and more. Each Metro/Modern app features the title as well as a close button, which is a welcomed addition to the operating system.

Update 1 also features a slight tweak to the All Apps list, showcasing all programs by default. Internet Explorer 11 has been bumped to version 11.0.3, but no word on exactly what is new with the browser. There is also a hidden “Enterprise Mode” in IE11.

If you manage to download this build and install it, we must warn you – this is not the final update and is bound to be buggy. Stay tuned, we will have a video review of the build shortly.

Update: You can check out our hands-on video of the build here.
