Steve Wozniak discusses potential of tablets and competition from Android

Steve Wozniak is known for speaking his mind. During a keynote session at the Storage Networking World in Santa Clara, Wozniak discussed the revolution in computing being realized in tablets as well as the increasing competition from Android.

As reported by Network World, Wozniak believes that tablets are the culmination of Steve Jobs’ original vision for Apple: “I think Steve Jobs had that intention from the day we started Apple, but it was just hard to get there, because we had to go through a lot of steps where you connected to things, and (eventually) computers grew up to where they could do … normal consumer appliance things.”

Although tablets are not necessarily the best tool for general productivity, Wozniak maintains that they provide a nice middle ground between the complexities of using a PC and the ease of use expected by the general consumer: “The tablet is not necessarily for the people in this room. It’s for the normal people in the world.”

Wozniak was also quick to disapprove of an Android dominated tablet category: “On the subject of tablets, I read today that Android tablets are expected to surpass iPads, and I hope that never happens.”

What is evident from the efforts of Apple and Google is that the tablet category is here to stay, with millions rushing out to buy the latest models. Microsoft may be downplaying the future of tablets however their recent work in Windows 8 paints a different picture and should provide some much needed competition and diversity.
