Rumor: Nokia Lumia Icon To Hit Global Markets Later This Year As The Lumia 929 – onmsft.com

Nokia Lumia Icon

Nokia Lumia Icon was released earlier this month and went on sale a few days before the Mobile World Congress kicked off. The handset offers top-of-the-line specifications found inside the Nokia Lumia 1520, but in a smaller form factor. Unfortunately, the handset is currently exclusive to Verizon in the US, but there’s a piece of good news for our readers across the globe. According to a new rumor, Nokia Lumia Icon will hit retail globally later this year as the Lumia 929.

According to TechnoBuffalo, citing industry sources, Lumia Icon will hit retail in other parts of the world in late-Spring or Summer after Microsoft unveils its next-generation Windows Phone 8.1 operating system. In addition, it’s said to launch under the Lumia 929 name, since the ‘Icon’ branding is exclusive to Verizon. Microsoft is expected to release the Windows Phone 8.1 around the time of the Build Developer Conference in April, so it makes sense for the handset to launch afterwards, and possibly with Windows Phone 8.1 as it’s operating system.

Microsoft is also expected to close the Nokia deal by the end of the first quarter, and so, there’s a chance they may sell the Lumia devices under the Microsoft name. However, it’s still unknown of what Microsoft will do in this regard, but Windows Phone devices may pick up pace in the coming months, especially after the launch of Windows Phone 8.1.

For those of you who can’t recall what Lumia Icon brings to the table, here’s a quick recap for you:

  • 5-inch display with 1080p resolution
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC clocked at 2.2GHz
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB internal storage
  • 20MP PureView camera with Carl Zeiss Optics
  • 1.2MP front-facing camera
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Windows Phone 8 Lumia Black

The question to our loyal readers is, will you purchase the Lumia Icon once it’s available globally?
