Microsoft VR Kit looks to compete with Google Cardboard – onmsft.com

An upcoming hackathon in Russia will offer developers the ability to create virtual reality games with Microsoft’s new Google Cardboard-esque virtual reality headset (via Neowin). The headset makes its debut in promotional images for the hackathon on a Russian Microsoft website. The website advertises to developers that they can create virtual reality games with ready-made tools and code templates for Microsoft’s new VR headset.
The headset itself looks to be the exact same concept as Google Cardboard as it seems to be made of a cardboard like material and is simply a means for holding a Lumia phone with the signature PureView logo on display in the promotional image. Google Cardboard, which was introduced at a Google I/O developers conference, was created as a low cost means to encourage the development of virtual reality and virtual reality applications. It looks Microsoft could be taking a similar strategy by offering these virtual reality kits to developers and making the Microsoft VR Kit front and center of its hackathon.
However, no word has emerged on Microsoft’s plans for this VR platform of what its implications would be for the Windows 10 Mobile. But it is an interesting potential addition to Microsoft’s growing VR and AR future with recently announced support for Oculus Rift and of course Microsoft’s own HoloLens. What do you hope Microsoft does with its VR Kit? Let us know in the comment section below.
