How To install Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones

In just two hours from this writing, we’re expecting a new build of the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones.  Now given that this is still early beta software, if you’re dependent on your phone, we suggest that you think hard about installing beta (read: buggy) software of any kind, but if you’re adventurous, or have picked up one of the many inexpensive Windows Phones for testing, you’ll need to do a couple of things to get the build installed.

First off, you need a compatible phone.  We posted the revised list in our What to Expect post, but here it is once again:

Lumia 520, Lumia 525, Lumia 526, Lumia 530, Lumia 530 Dual Sim, Lumia 535, Lumia 620, Lumia 625, Lumia 630, Lumia 630 Dual Sim, Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 638, Lumia 720, Lumia 730, Lumia 730 Dual SIM, Lumia 735, Lumia 810, Lumia 820, Lumia 822, Lumia 830, Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 928, Lumia 1020, Lumia 1320, Lumia 1520

Microsoft Lumia 430, Microsoft Lumia 435, Microsoft Lumia 435 Dual SIM, Microsoft Lumia 435 Dual SIM DTV, Microsoft Lumia 532, Microsoft Lumia 532 Dual SIM, Microsoft Lumia 640 Dual SIM, and Microsoft Lumia 535 Dual SIM.

Be sure to check out the post for more information on what might be included in this new build!

Make sure your phone is charged, at least to 40%, and ensure you have a good WiFi connection.  Always a good idea to plug the phone into the charger, too.

Next, before getting the new build, you’ll need to install the Windows Insider app on your phone, if you haven’t already.  Once the app is installed, fire it up and click on “Get preview builds”, and choose the “Insider Fast” option.  You must be in the Fast category, or you won’t get the latest builds, like the one coming today.

Once you have the Windows Insider app all set up, head to Settings > Update & recovery > phone update, and start pounding on “check for updates”, like we are now ;).  The new build is officially set to drop at 10am PDT (GMT -7), but you never know.

Once you’ve installed the latest and the greatest, make sure to check back with WinBeta, and tune in to our timely podcast, for all the latest on Windows 10 and Windows 10 for mobile!
