How to know if and when Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Cyan will be available for your handset

How to know if the Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Cyan updates are available for your handset

Earlier this morning, Microsoft rolled out Windows Phone 8.1 and Nokia Lumia Cyan updates. And while it’s a cause for celebration, don’t waste too much of your time tapping on your phone looking for the update, because it is likely not ready for your handset just yet.

Here’s how it works: Microsoft rolls out the update, but the update needs approval from your carrier and phone manufacturer. This delays the process by a week, a month, or longer. Furthermore, it is likely that the update will roll out to high-end premium devices, such as Lumia 1020, Lumia 1520, etc, and gradually release to budget handsets like the Lumia 520.

So while the update is technically out there, it will take a while before it becomes available on your device. Nokia handset owners have one advantage, though. Company maintains an availability page from where you can check whether the update is available in your region and for your device.

As of now, however, the update for all devices in all the regions are “under testing,” so it’s probably a good idea not to worry too much about it. But you should remain excited for the update, as Windows Phone 8.1 brings a plethora of amazing features, including the voice assistant service, Cortana, Action Center, Word Flow keyboard, WiFi Sense, Video app, and many more.

Then there is the Lumia Cyan update, which brings several more exciting features including the new Devices Hub, Enhanced Nokia Camera, updated Storyteller app, and more. Some of these apps and features will work on select Lumia devices.
