Free-to-play crossover fighting game MultiVersus enjoyed a stellar launch last summer, quickly reaching 10 million players following its full release in August, and then 20 million the following month.
It was the most successful game launch ever for Warner Bros. Games on Steam, and became the most successful fighting game ever on that platform, even going on to win Best Fighting Game honors at The Game Awards 2022.
But now it looks like the party may be over for MultiVersus. According to a report from Video Games Chronicle (VGC), player activity on the Steam version has plummeted to fewer than 1,000 players. By comparison, MultiVersus peaked with more than 153,000 players on Steam the day after its launch. That’s a drop of over 99%.
Why such a sharp decline in interest for the game? Most are pointing to a dearth of new content in Season 2, which has been a hot topic among fans of the game on social media. Since the launch of Season 2 back in November, only one new playable character has been added to the game’s roster (that being Marvin the Martian).
MultiVersus’ third season, which was initially set to release yesterday, has been postponed until March 31st.
