While the option to dress up Xbox avatars was popular when it first launch, it’s admittedly a feature that’s fallen by the wayside in recent years. Despite this decrease in popularity, the library of virtual clothes and props has continued to update on a regular basis with a variety of items either promoting a game or TV show, or simply offering a wider variety of fashion choices for gamers to choose from.
Some of the newer items that have been added over the past few weeks include the fun But First, Selfie prop (which animates an avatar into performing a number of selfie poses with its phone), a range of metallic gold Bling clothes, the Chess Match prop, two Super Bowl props, and a very cool Golden Fox Ninja costume.
There have also been a large number of new Gears of War clothes added to the Avatar Store to promote Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, which came out in late 2015, and in preparation of Gears of War 4, which is due out in late 2016.
Xbox Avatars debuted on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console in November 2009 and have since had functionality added to Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows phone, and Xbox One video games. The digital characters are a way for gamers to express themselves or create an online alias that’s different from their real-world self. A variety of free items are made available to all Xbox users but these mostly consist of different color basic t-shirts and pants. The more interesting accessories, complex animations, and costumes (see my Green Ranger costume in the above image) can be purchased with real-world money.
Recently, Microsoft has been bringing more attention to Xbox Avatars by giving them a bigger focus in the Xbox app on Windows 10 and an upcoming update to Xbox One will bring the Avatar Store to the current gen console.
