March is traditionally not among the strongest months of the year for retailers. Lacking the build up to a big holiday, and mostly without major game releases, sales of consoles are not at their highest.
If the latest figures from the NPD are anything to go by, this state of affairs remains, with console sales falling by 21% when compared to February. When compared to this point last year, overall industry figures are down by 6%, quite a large decrease.
Though Microsoft does not tend to compare release figures, it was content to note that, compared to the Xbox 360 at a similar point in its history, the Xbox One is currently performing better. Given the overall sales figures of the Xbox 360 during its lifetime, this is encouraging news from Redmond.
Despite this, the Playstation 4 remains the top-selling console currently available, outpacing the Xbox One and blazing past the Wii U. The Playstation 4 was also the top console for software sales, both globally and within the United States.
With the competition remaining neck and neck, but with Sony struggling, it will be interesting to see what developments the future of this race will hold.
