HTC 8X will not get Windows 10 Mobile

After fans of HTC’s Windows Phone-clad 8X asked the company about Windows 10 Mobile on Twitter, HTC has responded that the phone will not be getting an update to Microsoft’s new unified Windows platform.

HTC’s official UK Twitter account tweeted out the following:

@StefanMalter There are no further updates planned for the HTC Windows phone 8X currently ^CD

— HTC UK (@HTC_UK) January 11, 2016

HTC fans proceeded to leave questions regarding the 8S, as well as requests to clarify whether any further updates would be forthcoming from HTC or Microsoft for the 8X.  HTC has not yet responded.  The removal of the 8X from HTC Windows 10 Mobile lineup leaves only one device, the One M8 for Windows, to take the update when launched sometime this year (hopefully quite soon).

HTC’s One M8 for Windows, the company’s most recent foray into Microsoft’s mobile ecosystem, was included in the Windows Insiders Program allowing the device to get builds of the still-upcoming Windows 10 Mobile software release. With the 8X being left out of the Insiders Program, we’ve gotten confirmation that the device will not update to Windows 10 Mobile when it finally launches in the earlier parts of this year.

While unlikely, HTC could always change their mind if users express a strong enough desire. Otherwise, mobile Microsoft fans will be left with one less budget-friendly handset going into the rumored launch of the Lumia 650 and the coming-soon Windows 10 Mobile.
