After many years of rejection and resubmission, the .xxx domain was finally approved by ICANN earlier this year. The domain is opening it’s doors to businesses everywhere to claim their domains from today.
The year 2000 was the first time the .xxx domain was proposed, it was rejected, and rejected and rejected many times. But earlier this year, ICANN finally approved the domain, allowing anyone to register a .xxx domain.
The domain was created to promote a responsible approach to adult content on the internet and offer clear signposts of it’s locations online. It is currently only available to companies, brands and celebrities. This period will last for 50 days and is called the “sun-rise” period.
Companies such as Coca-Cola or McDonalds may want to register the domain to stop people from relating the companies to adult content. On the other hand, websites that are evolved around adult content may want to register the .xxx domain because it relates to the content of the site.
The domain will be available to the general public in 50-days, after the sun-rise period. Anyone will be able to register .xxx domain with whatever name they want.
