Xbox reading app for Windows 8 could be under-development

Microsoft has a few Xbox apps for Windows 8, including Xbox Music and Xbox Video, but it seems the Redmond giant is also working on another application to serve the reading needs of Windows 8 users. Recently, Microsoft updated their career page with a new job posting of “Software Development Engineer” for their Music, Video and Reading team, and hints at a possible reading app that supports books, magazines, and comics.

The role of the job advert mentions, “as an SDE, you will be on the team building a groundbreaking interactive reading app on Windows, which incorporates books, magazines, and comics. In this position you will be expected to drive, design, and deliver the features that you work on.” The ideal candidate will join the same team who already delivered a few Xbox apps for Windows 8. What’s even more surprising, and hints at a Windows 8 app, is the “desired qualification” section, which states “Windows 8 metro development experience.”

Microsoft already has a Reader app under its name in the Windows Store, but it offers simple functionality and lets users open PDF, XPS, and TIFF files. Microsoft might be looking to redesign the application with more functionality, and brand it under the Xbox name. The Verge also confirmed, citing sources familiar with the company’s plans, that Microsoft is planning to build a new reading app for Windows 8.

It’s just speculation, and there’s no solid proof if Microsoft is planning to launch such an app, or whether it will hit Windows 8 or Xbox Consoles as well. So, take this with a grain of salt. Here’s the link to the job posting on Microsoft’s Careers website.

Do you want to see an improved reading app from the folks at Redmond?
