A six-part documentary series on YouTube titled Power On: The Story of Xbox released in December 2021, as part of Xbox’s 20th anniversary celebrations. The docuseries covered a variety of topics ranging from the beginnings of Microsoft’s plans to enter the console games industry to the Xbox 360’s “red ring of death” to the Xbox One’s lackluster launch, and more.

According to the doc’s official description, “Xbox almost didn’t happen. Find out why in this behind-the-scenes, six-part series that takes you back to the scrappy beginnings of Microsoft’s video game console. It’s the untold story of the people behind the box, glitches and all.”

It looks like the series has made a lasting impression, as it has won a Daytime Emmy Award (for Outstanding Single Camera Editing).  This in addition to having won People’s Voice at the Webby Awards earlier this year. The prestigious Daytime Emmy was awarded during the 49th edition of the event, in which Power On: The Story of Xbox was also nominated in the “Best program on arts and popular culture” category.

This recognition is no doubt a great satisfaction for the many Xbox fans who found enjoyment in learning about the “people behind the box.”  The documentary has been released on a variety of platforms including YouTube, Redbox, IMDbTV, The Roku Channel, Microsoft, and more.
