Windows Phone hacker updates Internals tool to unlock all Lumia Windows phones

If you’re the technical type familiar with flashing devices, you’ve likely heard of Windows Phone Internals, a tool which unlocks Windows Phones and allows for root access. Though the tool has not been updated since 2015, the developer behind it recently revealed that a new update is coming soon, allowing to unlock the bootloader on all modern Lumia Windows phones (via Thurrott.com).

Noted on the Windows Phone Internals blog, the developer details that the upcoming version 2.2 has all the tools necessary to bypass SecureBoot on modern Lumia Windows phones. This allows for “custom ROMs, Mass Storage Mode, Root access and many more hacks to all Windows Phone 8 and Windows 10.” He also provides a YouTube video, explaining and demoing the direction where Windows Phone Internals is heading.

This is definitely interesting news, coming at a time when Microsoft gave up on Windows 10 Mobile and put it in maintenance mode. Developers may be able to take advantage of the updated Windows Phone Internals tool and fully unlock the hardware of Lumia devices, install otherwise unsupported operating systems, unlock features locked by mobile carriers, and more.

A timeline of a “few days” is being provided for when version 2.2 of Windows Phone Internals will go live. In the meantime, you can keep it locked to the Windows Phone Internals Blog, or the developer’s Twitter account for more information in the coming days.
