Windows Phone doubles in marketshare, currently world's fastest growing smartphone platform

New data has been revealed by the folks over at Strategy Analytics. According to the data, global smartphone shipments reached 251 million units during the third quarter of 2013. On top of that, Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform has doubled in market share and is currently the world’s fastest growing smartphone platform, as of Q3 2013.

According to the data, Microsoft has shipped more than 10 million Windows Phone devices worldwide during Q3 2013. This marks the first time Microsoft has shipped more than 10 million in a single quarter. In fact, Microsoft has doubled its global smartphone market share from 2% to 4% in just one year. This 10 million figure for Q3 of 2013 is impressive when compared to Q3 of 2012, which saw a mere 3.7 million Windows Phone devices shipped worldwide.

Of course, this growth is nearly all of Nokia’s doing, as the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone devices continue to improve in popularity in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Unfortunately, Windows Phone is failing to gain traction in Japan, South Korea, and Africa, according to Strategy Analytics.

On the other side of the fence, Google’s Android operating system continues to dominate with four out of every five smartphones now running Android. Google’s mobile operating system saw even more success when BlackBerry plummeted down to 1% in market share during this past year. Android now commands a 81.3% market share. Apple also lost some traction to Google’s Android OS and is now resting at 13.4% in share.

While Microsoft is still at a low level of market share worldwide compared to Android and iOS, the platform is seeing some nice growth. Let’s hope it continues.
