According to The Verge, Microsoft has been planning on retiring Windows Live Messenger client in favor of Skype. Microsoft has already begun to move people over to the Messenger backend for Skype, which already sees 80% of all instant messages being handled by Skype’s Messenger. Microsoft has already begun to link Microsoft accounts to user’s Skype login names. For example, Skype 6.0 for Windows (and Mac) now has options to log in using a Microsoft or Facebook account. Microsoft originally acquired Skype back in May of 2011. This announcement is expected to take place soon, even as early as next week, so stay tuned.
