Windows 8.1 Maps app

Microsoft’s Maps app in Windows 8.1 has received an update and this isn’t just a minor update. The Maps app now features Bing Smart Search integration, along with integration with Bing Travel and Bing Weather, among other new features. It’s nice to see a core app updated as the operating system hits general availability in a few days.

“Let the Bing Maps app bring the world to your fingertips. With stunning aerial and satellite imagery, comprehensive road coverage, and extensive local listings the Maps app makes it easier than ever to find and get directions to locations, businesses and events across the globe. With Windows 8.1, Bing also brings your social network and personalized recommendations to the Maps app. Sign in with your Facebook credentials to get picks for you, discover what businesses your friends like, and see what’s popular in your area,” the app description reads.

So what’s new in this update? The app now features Facebook sign-in so you can see what your friends like, what’s popular, and what’s recommended for you. There is also personalized Local Scout recommendations for restaurants, events, attractions, hotels, and more. Microsoft has also added integration with Bing Smart Search, along with Bing Travel and Bing Weather apps.

The app now features an updated and improved look, along with the ability to resize the app for improved Snap support in Windows 8.1. Other updates include:

  • Walking and transit directions
  • Find nearby by category
  • Venue maps
  • People picker to quickly find addresses from your contacts
  • Personalize your maps experience with favorites
  • Set My location
  • Click to call
  • Clickable landmarks
  • Improved navigation
  • Report a problem
