The official Telegram app for Windows 10 devices, Telegram Desktop, updated to Version 5.8 today. This latest update adds the ability to add contacts without using their phone numbers, a new feature for adding other users who are geographically close, and support for location-based chats.

The location-based chat feature is rather impressive as it allows anyone to begin a public chat that can be accessed by anyone else within 100 meters.

Here’s the full release notes:

  • Telegram 5.8 lets you add anyone to your Telegram contacts – even if you don’t have their number.
  • If you’re looking to exchange contact info with people standing next to you, try the new Add People Nearby section in Contacts. You will see other users within 100 meters who are also viewing this section at the same time.
  • The People Nearby section also shows Groups Nearby –public chats related to places around you. As of today, anyone can host location-based group chats in their city.
  • We’ve also added a tool to transfer group ownership and enhanced notification exceptions to all apps.

Telegram is a popular communication service with a strong emphasis on privacy and security. Recent app updates have included new background image options, anonymous polls, and custom languages.
