Whatsapp windows phone update adds free voice call functionality

While iOS and Android users have been enjoying free voice calls on WhatsApp for a while now, Windows Phone users have been forced to make old-fashioned paid phone calls to friends and family members, unless of course they use Skype, Line or any other app with similar functionality.

That all changes this week though with a new update to WhatsApp that adds the feature and should please the many Windows Phone users who have been waiting for it. Here’s the official description of the feature:

WHATSAPP CALLING: Call your friends and family using WhatsApp for free, even if they’re in another country. WhatsApp calls use your phone’s Internet connection rather than your cellular plan’s voice minutes.*  Available on Windows Phone 8+. (Note: you can’t access 911 and other emergency service numbers through WhatsApp).

Do you use apps on your Windows Phone to save money making phone calls? Which app is your favorite? Share your recommendations with the WinBeta community in the comments below.
