Files is a third-party file explorer app for Windows 11 and Windows 10 users that is available for download via the Microsoft Store. While Microsoft has made significant changes and enhancements over the years to Windows products and services, the File Explorer has not evolved much with Fluent Design.

However, we saw a developer from the Windows team launch his own File Explorer app for Windows in beta. And now, Files is getting a bunch of notable changes as well as improvements that are all designed to enhance its user experience. The most notable change is that the app is currently in the process of transitioning from UWP to WinAppSDK. This will in turn assist with getting builds more frequently and generally enhance its performance.

According to the Files Community post:

We’re already seeing the benefits of this transition with faster build times, easier access to APIs and improved performance when navigating between directories.

Some of the changes that you can expect when this update goes live include: the added option to double-click to open folders in the column layout, reorganized the options in the settings dialog to make them easier to find, and added support for extracting multiple archives at the same time.

Be sure to check out the Files Community post for more on these changes. You can also get to test them out by downloading the preview builds from Files’ official website. What’s more, they can be installed and used alongside the stable version.
