Symbian also losing Skype access in 'coming weeks'

Windows Phone 7 isn’t the only mobile operating system which will soon become incompatible for Skype. Microsoft has announced that Symbian users too will soon lose access to the popular instant messenger and video chat service.

Earlier this year, Microsoft had unpublished the Skype app from the Nokia Store. However, at that time, the users could still sideload the app to use the service “for a while”. Microsoft is now chopping the support lines for the Skype app from several outdated operating systems.

The company says that Skype for Symbian will stop working “within the next few weeks”. Some Symbian users who have used Skype on their handsets are receiving email from the Skype support.

Skype apps for Symbian are permanently retiring

We’ve noticed that you are, or previously were, signed into Skype on a Symbian phone, and we’re sorry to inform you that we are now permanently retiring all Skype apps for Symbian phones. As a result, within the next few weeks, you’ll no longer be able to sign in and use Skype on any Symbian phone.

You can still stay in touch with friends and family using Skype on an Android device, Nokia Lumia phone or desktop computer. You can sign into them all using the same Skype account. The latest versions of Skype for all your devices are available at http://www.skype.com/download.

Any Symbian users among our readers? What are you planning to do now? Would you get yourself a Windows Phone or any other OS-powered smartphone to continue using Skype?
