Sony: Microsoft’s motion gaming is “cute”

Sony Playstation’s CEO is a little unhappy about how rivals Nintendo and Microsoft are performing in the gaming industry. Jack Tretton, PlayStation’s CEO, goes on record with CNN and says some harsh things about Nintendo and Microsoft during his interview.

As Fortune Tech reports, Sony Playstation’s CEO Jack Tretton refers to Microsoft’s Kinect as “cute” and refers to Nintendo’s products as “baby-sitting tools.”

In reference to Nintendo’s products, Tretton goes on to say, “Our view of the ‘Game Boy experience’ is that it’s a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanes, but no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those. He’s too old for that.” Tretton was referring to Nintendo’s DS portable platform which has sold more than Sony’s PSP.

As far as Microsoft’s Kinect goes, Tretton thinks the motion gaming concept is “cute.” “I mean, you’ve gotta be kidding me. Why would I buy a gaming system without a hard drive in it? How does this thing scale? Motion gaming is cute, but if I can only wave my arms six inches, how does this really feel like I’m doing true accurate motion gaming?”

These are some harsh words directed towards Microsoft and Nintendo. Sony seems to be unhappy that the competition is performing better in the gaming market. Sony, on the other hand, is coming out with 3D gaming on its PS3 platform but its Next Generation Portable (NGP) will not support 3D. Sony believes that the 3D gaming experience should be limited to console gaming and not the portable system. The NGP launches later this year.

“Here we are 4 years into the Playstation 3, and it’s just hitting its stride. We’ll enjoy a long downhill roll behind it because the technology that was so cutting edge in 2006 is extremely relevant today and is conspicuously absent in our competition,” says Tretton as he boasts about his company’s flagship gaming system.

The Microsoft Kinect was recently awarded as the fastest-selling consumer electronics device by Guinness World Records. Maybe that’s why Sony is lashing out.
