Microsoft launched Nokia X2 handsets yesterday. Not only does X2 brings several hardware improvements over the previous generation Nokia X lineup of phones, it also sports a new software platform, dubbed 2.0. And this software works only with the X2, and won’t be compatible with the first generation X devices.
In a blog post, Yannis Paniaras, Head of the Mobile Phones UX Design Studio, notes that the new software platform is based on Android API 18 which corresponds to Android Jelly Bean 4.3, and due to hardware upgrades, it won’t be available for Nokia X, X+ and XL smartphones. He explains, “because of the necessary hardware upgrades, the Nokia X software platform 2.0 won’t be available on Nokia X, Nokia X+ or Nokia XL. However, more updates will be coming to further improve the experience of those devices in the coming months.”
The first generation X lineup ran an AOSP version of Android 4.1. While Nokia X had 512MB of RAM, X+ and XL sported 768MB of RAM. Though, none compare to the 1GB of RAM that X2 offers. Furthermore, X2 also has a better processor (Cortex-A7 vs A5).
