Skype for Android gains picture-in-picture multitasking

Skype for Android has been updated with an important new feature for tablet users — the ability to keep a video chat visible even when another app is active. This means that a video window can be floated on top of another app in a similar fashion to Windows 8’s Snap View.

Version 4.5 of the Android version of Skype now allows for multitasking while in the middle of video calls without missing out on anything that may be happening on-screen.

A post on the Skype explains that this new feature is only available in the tablet version of the app but that “you’ll still see a message asking for permission to draw on top of other apps when you download Skype 4.5 on your phone. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

If you have a particularly lengthy list of contacts, there is a new way to jump to individual entries. Make a pinch gesture on your contact list and you will zoom out to alphabet view. From here you can then tap the first letter of the name of the contact you’re looking for

Other improvements that have been made are:

  • Improved Video Instant Messaging functionality overall, including fixes on latest Samsung phones
  • Added compatibility for the Hudl tablet
  • Fixed crashes on the Nexus 5
  • Drop down filter selections on the people tab are now persistent
