Samsung Exec thinks Windows 8 is ‘no better’ than Windows Vista

Windows 8

According to Jun Dong-Soo, President of the Memory Business of Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions, the launch of Windows 8 has failed to bolster demand for PCs. He says that he does not expect the PC industry to rebound soon.

Speaking on Friday in a meeting with reporters at the COEX InterContinental Hotel in Seoul, South Korea, the Samsung senior executive said, “The global PC industry is steadily shrinking despite the launch of Windows 8”, and stated that he thinks the Windows 8 system is “no better than the previous Windows Vista platform.”

Jun also stressed that due to the failure of the Windows 8 platform there was no expected boost to PC sales, and forecast that the PC industry would gradually phase out. He pointed out that in line with the negative outlook in the global PC industry, Samsung Electronics is heavily cutting its production of conventional memory chips, for which the market is volatile and cyclical, and opting to produce more mobile chips for tablets and smartphones. He questioned the recent price rises of conventional memory chips even though the PC industry is declining.

”It’s really hard to understand price increases of traditional PC chips amid a bearish market,” he said. “Samsung does not manipulate the chip prices. This situation is surely unhealthy.’’
