New leadership for Microsoft’s OneDrive and Sharepoint is on the way. Chris Jones, the current head, will be transitioning to a new role in Microsoft’s Applications and Services Group later this year. His replacement is Phil Smoot who was recently the Vice President of Engineering for the OneDrive and Sharepoint team.
\
Jones’ job at Microsoft influenced almost anyone that has ever used a Microsoft device in the last few years because he was the leader of Microsoft’s OS services team. That team covered Microsoft accounts which are used by almost every Microsoft device.
\
The same team also works with critical infrastructure, and user experiences. Jones has held a number of positions at Microsoft including leader of engineering for Windows Live software and services, and vice president of program management and engineering for Windows.
\
According to ZDNet Jones will be taking some time off this summer before returning to his new, yet to be publicly announced, role at Microsoft.
\
Smoot’s new role has been confirmed by a Microsoft spokesperson “Chris Jones will be shifting to a new role on Qi’s team (Applications and Services Group) in the coming months. As he makes the transition, Phil Smoot, a long time Microsoft veteran, will take over leadership of the OneDrive and Sharepoint teams.”
