OneNote on Surface Pro 3: Microsoft offers a few useful 'magic tricks'

Microsoft is offering those who have ordered the Surface Pro 3, or are expecting to purchase the new 12-inch tablet device, a few tricks when it comes to utilizing OneNote. In the helpful video, Microsoft shows you how you can take a note, keep it with you all the time, and write on whatever you see on your screen.

For example, to take a note whenever you want, simply click the Surface Pen and OneNote will automatically launch on the Surface Pro 3. All you do now is start writing. Clicking the pen will always let you take your note. Another example Microsoft provides is the ability to select a region you want to clip by double-clicking the Surface Pen. The selection is then placed in your Quick Notes section in OneNote so you can write on it.

For those who will soon get their hands on a Surface Pro 3, make sure you head over to Windows Update to snag the latest updates for Windows and OneNote. These updates add some finishing touches, including the ability to double-click the pen to take a clip.

Here is a quick summary of the “magic tricks” you can utilize on your Surface Pro 3 while using OneNote:

  • To take a note whenever you want, click the Surface Pen and then write your note. It doesn’t matter if your Surface Pro 3 is locked or unlocked, or if your screen is off or on. Clicking the pen will always let you take a note.
  • To take a clip of whatever you see, double-click the Surface Pen, and then select the region you want to clip. The selection is placed in your Quick Notes in OneNote and is ready for you to write on. You also can search for text in the clips you take, which is great if you’re clipping articles and research.
  • Your Surface Pro 3 will come with the OneNote Windows Store App. If you prefer, you can use the desktop version, OneNote 2013 – get it free at www.onenote.com. You’ll be prompted to choose if you want to use it. Or you can configure which version to use in OneNote 2013: Click File, click Options, click Advanced, and then select Default OneNote Application.
  • To have all of the notes you take on your Surface Pro 3 with you all the time, get OneNote on all your devices for free. We offer Windows, Windows Phone, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android apps. You also can access your notes in your web browser at www.onenote.com.
