Offline maps to discontinue on Windows 11

Microsoft is discontinuing offline maps in the Maps app for Windows 11, as noticed by MSPowerUser, and this decision may be related to the expiration of an agreement between Microsoft and Nokia’s Here. Microsoft has not officially commented on it and the future of its Maps app.

Windows 11 Maps app users will receive a notification stating that offline maps will no longer be available by the end of 2023. After this date, users won’t be able to view offline maps within the app.

Microsoft acquired Nokia’s mapping and navigation business, Here, in 2015. Since then, the two companies have been collaborating to provide offline maps for Windows.

As of the time of this information, Microsoft has not officially commented on the future of its Maps app. It’s unclear whether this decision is permanent or if they have plans for an alternative solution. It’s not uncommon for technology companies to discontinue or sunset certain features or services due to various factors, like Web Select, such as changes in partnerships, evolving priorities, or shifting user preferences. Users who rely on offline maps should consider exploring alternative map services like Google Maps to meet their needs without Microsoft’s offline maps feature.
