In a surprise move, the Microsoft-owned Mojang announced and launched a version of the popular Minecraft video game for Nintendo’s New Nintendo 3DS handheld console today.
“We want to stress that the game is only on New Nintendo 3DS,” Mojang’s Tom Stone said in the announcement. “We’ve used all the technical might of the dual-screened wonder machine to give you world sizes of 2016×2016 and 128 blocks high – that’s even larger than the worlds on the Wii U version! Multiplayer won’t be available at launch but we will be adding local multiplayer in a future update. This edition’s closest equivalent is 0.15.4 of Minecraft: Pocket Edition, and we’ll be continuing to update from there!”
This version of Minecraft is only available on the New 3DS consoles which are slightly more powerful versions of the regular 3DS’. It also appears as if this version of Minecraft won’t be getting the Better Together update which will add crossplay between the Xbox One, Windows 10, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game later in 2017. Gamers thinking of buying Minecraft and who would like to play online with friends on other consoles and enjoy more of the game’s newer features may want to avoid this version and pick up one of the supported ones instead. Still, this New 3DS version could be a fun option for younger players who can’t afford a Nintendo Switch and would like to play Minecraft on the go.
