The last time we heard about any sort of Windows 8 sales figure – directly from Microsoft – was back in May of 2013, when the company stated over 100 million licenses of the operating system were sold. Today, Microsoft has indicated that this figure has now doubled.
As ZDNet reports, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Marketing Tami Reller mentioned during an appearance at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference on February 13th that Windows 8 has seen over 200 million licenses sold.
Now, Microsoft isn’t expected to provide sales figures every month, but an update every once in a while would surely keep the haters quiet. People tend to easily perceive that the operating system isn’t doing too well if Microsoft doesn’t provide any sales figures – as evident by comments all throughout news stories on our site and other news sites.
Windows 8 hit the market back in October of 2012. Comparatively, Windows 7 hit the 240 million licenses sold mark in the first twelve months, while Windows 8 is barely passing the 200 mark after approximately fifteen months.
These figures include sales of licenses to OEMs, as well as Windows 8 upgrades, and do not include copies of Windows 8 sold via volume licensing.
