Microsoft: Xbox 360 sales ‘accelerating’

As the E3 video game conference rapidly approaches, Microsoft is not holding back on bragging about its progress in the video game arena. Microsoft is already bragging that the company has sold 55 million Xbox 360 units worldwide since it launched.

As cnet reports, Microsoft is already bragging about how the company sold 55 million Xbox 360 units worldwide since launching in 2005. Microsoft also states that Xbox 360 sales are “accelerating.” In just the first four months of this year, sales were up 29% compared to the first four months of last year.

Microsoft can thank the launch of the Kinect motion gaming peripheral for its success in the gaming arena. The Kinect was launched last year and has allowed the Xbox to increase its sales over time rather than plummit. For example, most major consoles such as the PlayStation 1, GameCube, and Nintendo 64 lost sales over time especially during their fifth and sixth years. Sony’s Playstation 3 has sold 50 million consoles worldwide since its launch.

These may be excellent figures for both Microsoft and Sony, but they have a long ways to go compared to Nintendo. Nintendo announced earlier this year that the company had sold over 86 million Wii consoles since launching in 2006.

Lets see what E3 has in store for all three companies, especially Microsoft. Stay tuned as we keep you posted on any late breaking E3 news.
