Microsoft has just announced that it will retire its Docs.com file sharing service on December 15. As our own James learned earlier today, the company has started to send the following email to all Docs.com users, inviting them to move their existing content to other services including OneDrive:
We wouldn’t be surprised if you never heard about Docs.com before. Just like the recently closed So.cl niche social network, Microsoft never really advertised the file sharing service. As the company explained in a support article today, this decision was made to put more wood behind fewer arrows, mainly LinkedIn Slideshare and OneDrive:
Following Microsoft’s acquisition of LinkedIn, SlideShare has joined the Microsoft family, and represents the ideal platform for publishing your Word, PowerPoint, and PDF content with its audience of 70 million professionals, and vast content library. For custom sharing, OneDrive offers additional tools, permission settings, and security to help share and protect your data and content. With the retirement of the Docs.com service, we hope to streamline our offerings in this space and provide you with a more cohesive experience.
If you have a lot of content on Docs.com, Microsoft will enable automatic backup of compatible files to OneDrive and OneDrive for Business before the site disappears on December 15. You can learn more about how to back up your files on the support page.
