Windows 10 will reportedly have two options for update programs, and you will get to choose which one is right for your set-up.
The first one is an ‘Opt-in’ and will opt you into updates right as they are published; these will be the fast updates Microsoft has been talking about for Windows 10. It will enable them to address issues, and provide improvements even faster than rival Operating Systems. Promises like this and the monthly updates to Cortana make the future of Windows very exciting from a consumer point of view.
The second option is to ease the panic that enterprise IT departments feel when new updates are pushed. Fast updates do not suite organization environments that place stability over everything else. The ‘Lock-down’ option will be similar to the current Windows Update, where machines will only get security updates and critical fixes. The feature updates will be left to organizations to manage and then push to their devices.
If implemented as promised, this is one of the most exciting changes in Windows. I used to love Ubuntu’s 6 month release cycle, but Microsoft could be pushing new features even faster than that! The potential is endless, now we just have to hope Microsoft executes well.
