Microsoft has finished rolling out its biggest Bing Maps address data upgrade in years, bringing TomTom Orbis Maps addresses to users worldwide after a nine-month phased rollout that began in June 2025. This update directly improves how Bing Maps, Bing Search, Copilot, and Azure Maps handle location queries, which now resolve with higher accuracy and better coverage across regions.
Microsoft explains that TomTom Orbis Maps builds on a shared mapping standard developed with the Overture Maps Foundation, combining OpenStreetMap data, partner datasets, sensor observations, and TomTom’s own mapping inputs. As a result, Bing Maps now benefits from a continuously updated dataset that reflects real-world changes faster and more reliably.
- Greater address coverage with more mapped locations globally
- Improved positional accuracy that places addresses closer to exact locations
- Fresher data through continuous updates instead of static refresh cycles
How Microsoft rolled this out
Microsoft took a phased approach instead of switching everything at once, starting with key European markets where data quality improvements were immediately clear, then expanding region by region after validating coverage, accuracy, and performance against existing data.
Real world impact
For example, a search for a specific address in Belgrade previously returned only a nearby match, but with Orbis data Bing Maps now identifies the exact building, showing how this upgrade improves everyday navigation and search results at scale.
