Microsoft Teams expands data residency to Canada, Australia and Japan coming soon

Microsoft announced last week that it now provides data residency for Microsoft Teams in Canada, using two of its data centers in Quebec City and Toronto. Since August 10, 2018, all new users of Microsoft Teams in Canada will now automatically have data stored in the country. For existing users, the company will provide a migration feature next year.

“Teams data residency in Canada, as well as our other Office 365 data residency commitments in the datacenter geo in Canada, help regulated organizations, like in education, banking, public sector, government, and healthcare, onboard to Teams and Office 365 while complying with their data residency requirements,” wrote Varun Sagar, Product Manager, Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft already provides data residency for Teams in six Office 365 geos: Asia Pacific, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Asia), North and South Americas, the UK, India and now Canada. The company is planning to expand data residency to more Office 365 geos, including two before the end of the month (Australia and Japan) and more next year including South Korea and France.
