According to a recent report, Microsoft’s Security Essentials is the most popular security solution worldwide. This is credited to Microsoft’s push of the free security solution via Windows Update and integration to Internet Explorer.

Apparently, Microsoft’s Security Essentials is the most popular security solution according to OPSWAT’s Q2 Antivirus Market Share Report. This report covers the second quarter of 2011.

Microsoft’s Security Essentials, which is currently at version 2.0, is a free and simple security solution for Windows users. Launched in 2009, Microsoft has revealed that the antivirus has surpassed the 30 million download mark. Microsoft can thank this statistic to the company’s move to push the software via Windows Update, making it easier and convenience for users to install a free antivirus.

“Microsoft’s gain from last quarter could be attributed to the distribution advantage that Microsoft Security Essentials holds due to the convenient installation through Windows Update and its smooth integration with the popular IE browser,” the report said.

Microsoft is also the top dog when it comes to the North America antivirus market with a share of 17.07%. AVG is in second place with 15.63% and Symantec is third with 14.47%.

On an interesting note, Microsoft’s free and popular antivirus program received a poor score when compared to 22 other anti-virus programs.
