Microsoft Surface device

Microsoft has rolled out a firmware update for the Surface Pro in preparation for the upcoming Windows 8.1 release on October 17th. The Surface RT, on the other hand, received no firmware update and is still slated to receive Windows RT 8.1 on October 17th.

The firmware update for the Surface Pro, also known as the October 2013 firmware update for the Surface Pro, consists of UEFI firmware updates along with System Aggregator firmware updates. Microsoft has also updated various device drivers to enhance the Windows 8.1 update experience, as well as provide optimizations for the new Type Cover 2 and/or the Touch Cover 2.

An interesting thing to note is that this October 2013 update for the Surface Pro adds support for the new Touch/Type Covers. Does this mean the Surface Pro will be able to utilize these new covers? The answer is yes! The Touch Cover 2 has 1092 sensors, compared to the original Touch Cover as well as a high resolution sensor that helps you avoid missing a key when typing. These new covers will work on the first-generation Surface devices.

Microsoft recommends applying these updates prior to installing Windows 8.1 on October 17th. Head over to Windows Update to snag these updates on your Surface Pro.
