Microsoft teases ‘The New Fragrance by Xbox’ in clever marketing tactic for Destiny – onmsft.com

Microsoft reveals Destiny for Xbox, or maybe not

No, Microsoft is not planning to give away perfume bottles to Xbox users. This actually is an ad for the upcoming gaming title Destiny which will arrive on Xbox One, and Xbox 360 on September 9.

But technically it’s not an ad, as Microsoft UK is legally not allowed to advertise about Destiny. Why? I’m glad you asked. It’s rival, Sony has an exclusive deal with Bungie and publisher Activision for various content, which includes rights to advertise as well. But that doesn’t mean Microsoft can’t take a swing at Sony.

Right below the advertisement, Microsoft has put a proper explanation. “Okay, so here’s the lowdown. Destiny is actually an epic new first-person shooter, available on Xbox. Thing is, we didn’t have permission to run adverts for the game. So we didn’t.”

Kudos to Microsoft for this clever marketing. Do you recall any similar funny ad? Share with us in the comments below!
