In August. we saw Microsoft shut down Modern Life Experiences which saw approximately 200 employees lose their jobs. Microsoft further indicated that it was slowing down its hiring process across Windows, Teams, and Office teams back in May.
And as it now seems, the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are still purging the organization. Microsoft has apparently laid off some of its employees across multiple divisions, joining a long list of tech companies that have also been downsizing as a means to mitigate the looming economic crisis.
Microsoft further commented on the matter and told Axios that:
Like all companies, we evaluate our business priorities on a regular basis, and make structural adjustments accordingly. We will continue to invest in our business and hire in key growth areas in the year ahead.
Microsoft did not mention the exact number of employees that were affected, but according to Axios’ source, the number is allegedly under 1,000 layoffs. The Verge’s Senior Editor, Tom Warren further added in a Tweet that the employees were from the Experiences and Devices, Xbox, and legal divisions.
Microsoft has started layoffs today. I’m hearing some in Experiences + Devices, Xbox, legal, strategic tech positions, and elsewhere are impacted. The layoffs impact less than 1,000 employees, but some veterans and truly talented teams are impacted ???? https://t.co/TpxABLt8v7
