Microsoft releases patch to notify Windows 7 users about upcoming end of support

As we have already reported, Microsoft is getting ready to end support for the almost 10-year-old Windows 7 operating system. As spotted by TechCrunch, the company has already pushed its first patch which includes the popup informing users of the deadline on January 14th, 2020. However, users should begin receiving notifications on April 18^th, giving them plenty of time to consider other options.

Should they continue using the operating system after that time, he or she will be forgoing on security updates and will be at a much greater risk of malware and cyberattacks. Microsoft strongly recommends them to buy a new PC with Windows 10 pre-installed, but those who already have computers that work fine should be able to upgrade relatively easily.

For businesses, Microsoft will also provide them an option to continue receiving security updates and technical support after the expiration date for an annually fee, which will gradually increase overtime. That said, upgrading to Windows 10 would likely be more cost effective, and the company is even willing to assist businesses in upgrading and making sure that all applications work just fine.

Interestingly, Windows 7 still holds a major cut of the desktop market according to Net Applications, as noted by TechCrunch. With the operating system quickly becoming obsolete, it shouldn’t be long before that number begins to rapidly shrink.
