Is Microsoft readying their own smartphone if the Nokia and HTC partnership comes up short? – onmsft.com

Microsoft is betting big with its upcoming Windows phone 8 operating system and its partnerships with Nokia and HTC. However, if the partnership with these two companies fail, Microsoft has an alternative plan already set in motion. If these two handset makers come up short, Microsoft is looking to make their own phones now so the company won’t have to start building its own hardware from scratch on short notice, according to a report from Bloomberg.

“We are big believers in our hardware partners and together we’re focused on bringing Windows Phone 8 to market with them,” Microsoft stated in an email statement. It makes sense that Microsoft would do what they did with the Surface tablet and simply create their own smartphone to market Windows Phone 8. Both Nokia and HTC are expected to launch their Windows Phone 8 handsets in the United States this month. According to many reports, the Lumia 900 did not sell well so Microsoft is betting big with the upcoming Lumia 920. Microsoft has yet to confirm or deny these reports/rumors about the company creating its own smartphone.
