One feature that the Surface Pro and Surface RT did not have was the ability to connect to an official docking station. In fact, no such docking station even existed. This will change, however, with the upcoming Surface 2.0 devices. Leaks have been forming recently in this past week where we have been learning about the specifications and new accessories that the upcoming ‘Surface Pro 2.0’ will sport.
Just to review, it will pack Intel’s latest Haswell Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a refined kickstand. We’ve also heard how it will have a Power Cover that will work just like the Type Cover but will have a battery for additional power for the device.
Today, leaks from an anonymous source said that Microsoft is working on a desktop docking station. Reports from Neowin.net and Windows SuperSite confirm that the docking station will work with both the Surface Pro and the Surface Pro 2. The docking station will automatically charge the docked tablet. Unfortunately, this docking station will not work on the Surface RT or Surface RT 2.0.
According to Paul Thurrott’s Windows SuperSite, he states that the design will allow the Surface to slide in at a steady angle and have arms supporting it to stay in place and release the tablet from the docking station. Just like a regular desktop, the docking station will have one USB 3.0 port on the side, two USB 2.0 ports in the back, a mini DisplayPort, a 1Gbps Ethernet port and a dedicated microphone and headphone/speaker port.
Since we don’t know when the next-generation Surface will be announced, sources confirm that the docking station will be announced the same day Microsoft will make Windows 8.1 available to consumers worldwide. Pricing is also not available right now, we’re just going to have to wait for upcoming leaks.
