A couple of weeks ago, we learned that Microsoft would remove its Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business and Yammer Windows Phone apps from the Microsoft Store on May 20. The announcement came as a surprise given that Windows 10 Mobile will be supported through December 2019 at least, and Windows phones are also still being used in corporate environments.
But as spotted by All About Windows Phone today, Microsoft apparently had a change a mind. Indeed, the company quietly pushed back the retirement dates for the Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business Windows Phone apps earlier this month, though it’s not all good news:
- Microsoft Teams will be removed from the Store on July 20, and the app will stop working on after October 20 (unfortunately, the web app doesn’t work on Windows 10 Mobile).
- The Skype for Business app will disappear from the Store in December 2019 (August 2018 for Windows Phone 8.1 devices), though Microsoft notes that the app may continue to work after that date.
It’s not clear why the Microsoft Teams app need to be retired a full year before the Skype for Business app, especially since Teams will soon replace the latter as the core communication hub in Office 365. Anyway, both Windows Phone apps won’t get any new features, and going forward you’ll pretty much have to switch to iOS and Android if you want to have the best experience.
